I was given a Liebster Award!

I must give my many thanks to ChicoDaSatanic over at oldhammer on a budget for nominating me to receive the Liebster Award. Click on the link to check out his blog and the other blogs that he nominated... Go on... Enjoy yourself with a bit of link-hopping... :)

Anyhoo... What is the Liebster award?
It is basically a little like a chain letter. you are nominated by a blogger and in turn nominate several other bloggers to partake in the steps and pass on the award.

The purpose?
To show a little bit of appreciation for some of the blogs that you follow and hopefully to send a little more traffic their way and get them a bigger audience and vice-versa. It's a share-the love kinda deal.

What do I have to do when nominated?
Well there are several variations I've seen going around the blog-sphere, but they're all pretty similar in approach. This one specifically I have to follow these steps:
  • Give 11 truths about myself.
  • Answer the 11 questions given to me by the blogger that gave me the nomination.
  • Tag and link to 11 bloggers to who may follow the same steps.
So... Let's get this shindig started...

11 Truths About Myself:

1. I have Dyslexia and mild Dyscalculia, I wasn't diagnosed until I was way into college about 5 years ago and the support staff said they couldn't help me because I'd trained my brain to work around the problems in new ways. Thus I tend to come at many things in different ways than most.

2. I have suffered from chronic depression probably since early adolescence and the last decade has been really rough, but I've kept on fighting it.

3. I am a really big vampire fan (in most media) and The Lost Boys is my favourite movie of all time. I just find it so easy to watch, or have on the background of whatever else I'm doing, it's always fun and I NEVER get bored of it. At the time of writing this I've probably watched it 20+ times this year alone.

4. I like to watch really bad horror movies, I mean low/no budget, wooden acting, badly scripted,  nonsensical bad. I just find them really entertaining and funny to watch.

5. I haven't worked for quite some time even tough I'd like to. I'm full time carer for my partner as she has many degenerative health problems and I've also been full time carer for my disabled Mother (who lives with us) since I was 12 years old. Throw 4 kids aged 4, 6, 12 and 14 into that mix and you see how full my time is.

6. I have a very eclectic taste in music... From Heavy Metal to Dance to Reggae to Punk to Classical to Gothic to 80's pop and bloody all sorts in between.

7. I believe Creativity and Escapism go pretty much hand in hand and have been very good for me, so I try to cultivate them as much as possible. Art, miniatures, wargaming, roleplaying, music, reading... all different ways to break out of my head and run away to Neverland.

8. I probably watch cartoons as much, if not more, than my children do.

9. I could not live in a world without Tea... Seriously... I'd probably burn it to the ground... *twitch*

10. I actually have qualifications in Horticulture and Agriculture. Skills that I have not used for a very, very long time.

11.  I scream like a girl when a spider comes near me.

11 Questions From ChicoDaSatanic:

1. How long have you been in this wonderful (Read: geeky) hobby?
I'm not sure exactly, the clearest memory I have is the release of Heroquest by GW/MB Games in 1989. But I'm sure that I knew about roleplay and wargaming earlier than that. But I use 1989 as my definite benchmark... So... 25 years... Ish.

2. Relating to the hobby what have you daydreamed about most?
I've always wanted to open and run my own gaming store, supplying wargaming and roleplaying products, with a large dedicated gaming space, that would be an awesome way to spend the rest of my days.

3. Out of every game system which gets you most excited?
Oooh... Tough one... Probably Warhammer 40,000 2nd ed for skirmish gaming. And in roleplay it would have to be Vampire the Masquerade, also 2nd ed. Or possibly D&D?

4. How much do you love me?
Oh!.. I don't know... We haven't known each other for very long... This is all too fast... What will the children say!?!

5. Favourite White Dwarf number?
I'd have to say, Issue 123. It was the first that I actually bought as a kid and I read it to death. A friend bought me a new copy of it recently as a gift when I told him about how much I loved it.

6. Are you going to the Oldhammer Weekend?
Unfortunately that's a no. I don't have the time, resources, army, travel etc for such an outing. It does sound pretty awesome though.

8. Have you been to Warhammer World?
No, but it is on my wish-list.

7. Favourite adult beverage?
Hobgoblin real ale from the Wychwood brewery, Guinness, Kraken black spiced rum, La Fey Absinthe , a nice glass of Cabernet sauvignon.

9. What do you love about Oldhammer/Retro Gaming?
I think that a lot of older gaming systems just felt a lot better to play. The backgrounds were usually a little more open allowing you to make your own stamp on the setting. Miniatures, Art and writing of the time just had more character and were a lot more appealing than what now feels to be diluted and mass marketed/produced. And nostalgia is a big part too, it brings back a lot of happy/wonderful memories.

10. How much have you spent on your hobby in the last 5 years?
I don't know! I don't want to know! And I definitely wouldn't write it down here if I did know, because the missus would probably emasculate me!

11. Why do you read my Blog, Oldhammer on a Budget?
I'm a relatively new follower to your blog, but I like it for many of the same reasons I wrote in the retro gaming question.
Those projects I have read and commented on so far have a lot of character, great miniatures and I like the way you write.

My Nominations:

I found this really difficult to do, it's hard to find a blog I am following that hasn't already been nominated before and I'm not sure I was successful on that count or not. After a few hours of trawling through my blog list I got down to a list that was still far too big...

So I made my final choices in the most fair, scientific and gaming appropriate manner possible...

I let the dice decide...

Sorry for any of the awesome blogs out there that I follow that haven't received a nomination... I found it too hard to cut the list down and it is now down to the vagaries of fate.

Here are my 11 nominations:

I'm going to try and contact the individuals that run these blogs to inform them of my nomination. It's up to them whether they want to accept and carry on the chain.

If they decide to take part they will have the same steps:
  • Give 11 truths about yourself.
  • Answer the 11 questions I write for you.
  • Tag and link to 11 bloggers and give them 11 questions, who may then follow the same steps.
My questions:

1. How did you first get into your hobby?
2. Who is your favourite artist/s or hobbyist/s and would you like to emulate their style/s?
3. What is the worst hobby related accident you have suffered? (this can be physical or bad paint-job etc)
4. What have you wanted to do in the hobby but have put off for a long time?
5. Would you say you are more a hobbyist or gamer and why?
6. Do you have a comfort zone in painting technique or colours that you tend to fall back on?
7. Do you like to have the right atmosphere when working on your hobby, music, movies, quiet?
8. What was the first miniature you ever bought/painted?
9. What one hobby item (miniature/game system) that's long out of production/rare, would you love to have?
10. What else do you like to do to pass the time?
11. When you finally shuffle off this mortal coil, what would you like to happen to your hobby collection?

So to my followers, follow the links, have fun and maybe you'll find some more interesting blogs to add to your blog-list. If you have the time and inclination there are many more in my profile too that I couldn't fit into the nominations.

That's enough from me, thank you for reading and take care.
Jonah
